MMA Betting Terms
Here we have a list of the most important terms used in MMA fights betting.
Bookie – a person who accepts local bets and sometimes people also refer to sportsbooks as bookies on the web.
Chalk – favorite of the fight, or the guy who has – odds.
Dog – the underdog of the fight, the guy who has + odds.He can also have negative odds between -115 and -105.
Edge – your competitive advantage when betting. It can happen because you know more about the fight or the odds posted on the fight.
Even Money (EVN) – situation when bet’s odds are 1:1 or +100 . Then it is called even money.
Favorite – the fighter who is considered to become a winner. Sportsbooks mark this fighter with a negative sign infront the money line.
Handicapping – this is strategy and research you use when making a bet. There are many different ways to handicap a fight and usually every bettor has his own and sticks to it.
Handle – it is an amount of bets made on a fight or event, usually taken by one sportsbook.
Limit – the maximum amount of money that bettors are allowed to bet on a fight.
Line – synonym for odds for a fight.
Moneyline – in MMA fights odds express money like moneyline of -145 means, that for every $1.45 you bet, you get $1 profit.
Odds – value expressed in numbers by the sporsbook which reflects the likelihood of each fighter winning the fight.
Opened (opening line) – the odds that were set the first time when the line was put out for betting.
Parlay – a set of certain fights in which all the fighters you betted on must win in order for you to win the bet. In return you get better odds for your bet.
Prop Bet – this is a very specific bet when you bet on a particular round when the fighter will end the fight. If you choose the round correctly, you get paid more than a normal bet.
Push (draw) – when the fight has no winner it is marked as a draw and all bets are payed back.
Sportsbook – a company or a website that takes your bets for fights.
Square – a person who is a fresh beginner at sports betting.
Totals Bet – when betting in MMA you may bet on the amount of rounds the fight would last. The sportsbook sets a total (certain number of rounds) and then you bet over or under that number.
Underdog – the fighter who’s odds are positive which means that if you bet on an underdog and he wins you get paid more than your original bet.
