Damn Chuck. That really wasn’t much of a punch at all. His chin is absolutely gone. For his sake i wish he would’ve retired 2 fights ago. Just not a dignified way to go out.
That is actually not correct.I called this fight and it was excatly as predicted. It has nothing to do with Chuck’s jaw being weak. Yes he will be more prone to ko’s after being ko’d befor but he was knocked out here becuse he had his body momentum going fully toward Rich with his jaw extended (no body to anchor the jaw) and Rich timed the counter. A brand new fresh 10 year ago Chuck would have been ko’d teh same way. It’s the same way 170lb Manhoef ko’d 265 iron chined Mark Hunt, how Seth dropped Kimbo, how 170lb Kaokolai ko’d Mighty Mo. ..i.e Bruce Lee’s “interception” theory of taking our opponents momentum and making it yours.
I’m sorry but Joe Rogan talks out of his ass. I like the guy but he seriously need some education when it comes to the striking game. he absolutely has no clue
I actually felt that was one of Chuck’s best performnances. He had better footwork, versality, and snap than most of his previous fights. Only problem now is he is actually fighting “Strikers” rather than the hand picked primarily grapplers he used to be”hooked” up with. ie. Couture, Randallman, Babalu, Ortiz, Horn. b/w all them they have 2 ko on the foot.
when chuck started to get ko’d- he started fighting more decent strikers not b/c he go t old- ,Rampage,Shogun,Franklin, etc
Chuck got exposed b/c fan demand forced UFC to put him up against “non-hand picked opponet”.. Chuck has decent power but footwork, angling, and head movt is much below par of a k-1/Boxer level. He was getting a lot of ko’s b/c his previous opponents are not usd to being hit and not well versed in striking. many of Chuck’s ko occured teh same way- Chuck would get rocked, his opponents would turn overly agressive, overcommit, and get countered. Rich just flipped the script. Chuck has good power but he is not a monster puncher. got caught overly agreesive grapplers with counters. as witnessed, people used to stand up can take his punches- wandy took 5-6 hit power combos from him w/o dropping while it took Hendo just one, Rampage took his punches with ease in their first fight, etc,
I respect Chuck b/c he pioneered the era of Striker domination by showing people that if you can stop the takedowns and win on the feet but the cold hard fact is he was never a gifetd striker as UFC marketed and made him to be. I just chuckle at those blind sheep morons that follwed UFC’s marketing and declared Chuck would kill a prime “tyson”. of course now they will say – it’s Chuck’s life style or he is old. How great would it be if I can as easily brainwash and elimate any ability to think intelligently as Dana does to his followers.
Anyone will do well if matched up with perfect opponents against his strenghts.
UfC is getting a bit better but many of their fights are still very largely based on “hand picked opp” to protect their marketed Golden boys. But fan demand is causing them to loose some of that grip.
Chuck should come back for one last fight vs. Tito. It’s about time for Tito to call it quits. That fight would be a fight to see who retires a winner.
@ cny: I think you make a few valid points when it comes to chuck having fought many grapplers in his fighting career, however don’t forget he beat a younger and faster Vitor( who has amazing boxing) by decision and also knocked out a younger and faster Allistair Overeem(a prolific dutch kickboxer by trade whom also competes in K-1) in Pride. The biggest problem I saw with Chuck was that he never evolved his skills as a fighter and onstantly relied on his take down defence and striking to win fights. He stopped mixing things up after a certain point in his career becuase he had a formula that worked for him (just take a look at Lyoto Machida)and once people who were able to figure out how to beath his technique he never tried to change or evolve as a fighter until his fight with Franklin but by then obviously with his age and the influx of amazing fighters the UFC has now it really did not make that big of a difference.
I think what he did was amazing for the sport and the UFC and the sport of MMA would not be where it is today without superstars like him and Randy Couture. However, I personally believe that had he fought his prime in Pride it would have been a whole different story for Chuck and he wouldn’t have been as great or even the champion in that organization due to its unbelievable talent pool and different rules.
Allen and CNY you guys are right. One main thing that I’ve noticed is that this hybrid fighting seems to almost weaken some peoples chin. I understand getting caught blind is the best way for a knockout but this begs the question, how can any mma fighter be considered the best in the world if all it takes is the opponent looking to land one perfect shot? Is the goal to end the fight quickly or do we want TUF 1 finales? Chuck was a great way to market UFC with his look and knockouts but if Dana didn’t match him perfectly to get these knockouts I think the ufc and mma would be gone by now. I think dana had to put chuck in these positions because he was the right guy at the right time. Now with ufc growing and adding real fighters it seems that no one besides anderson and gsp can hold the belt for more than 2 fights. Anderson at this point by running and GSP by grounding… which is working well for him but by round 4 when gsp gets a takedown I’m already surfing the channels.
I agree with some of your points as well. I like Chuck and respect for his role in developing the sport. No one can deny that Chuck was instrumental in making MMA what it is today. He made it exciting for people who got bored with “Jiu Jitsu is everything club” and brought about a fresh new appeal to whole wider array of fans.
However, many of these fans blindly followed the marketing ploy of UFC and didn’t see how “styles” really do make the fight. Proof in the pudding is that mma math never works simply b/c of this fact. styles makes fights whether its boxing, kickboxin.
Chuck was a decent striker with decent power but the truth is he never was technically gifted. he just happened to be the first one to figure out that you can keep the fight on the feet via reverse wrestling and had that unique ability to shut down the ground game his opponents. Yes he did deafeat Vitor(bit controversal on that decision as well) but Vitor hgimself is not a great boxer. He had unbelievable hand speed which attributed to his flashy ko’s but he himself is not versed very well technically. someone with with good technical subtleties and angling who is not intimidated can easily pick him apart. ala Couture, – even Sakaruba knocked him flat on his ass with a reverse thrust kick to the body.
Chuck beat the old Alistair b/c Alistair gassed..which was his biggest downfall at that weight-most of Alistair’s losses at the time were due to him gassing quickly after dominating initially. But Alistair clearly dominated and picked chuck apart initially.
I also agree Chuck would never would have faired well in Pride b/c the ring and the rules were geared toward Strikers vs the cage and the Octogon rules, which is geared toward grapplers—8 corners/ and mostly no kick allowed to a downed opponet is pure bs and just idiotic although that is the commisioners’s ruling.
miss a shoot, perfect counter.. quick soccer kick..game over. rewatch a lot of UFC fights and recalculate how sooo many fights would have ended up differently if it wasn’t for this rule. Couture vs Hizzo for one,.
“Dana the douch” was so quick to jump on how Pride fighters faired bad in the UFC while giving the chosen UFC fighter every adv .making the pride fighters fight under the worst conditions,.he only foght them when pride figheter was at a distinct adv.. first you have to deal with acompletely different atmosphere- quiiet audience vs obnoxiously loud aud, cage vs ring, diff rules. add to that most pride fighters had to fight main event matches after two year layoffs with no warm -up matches- Wandy, Shogun or after Surgery/sick- Shogun, nog etc.
Dana knew this when he calculated this ploy b/c he will be the first to admit “ring rust s very real”. then why Dana would you fighht these fighters afters two years of not fighting knowing this if you truly wanted to serve the sport and teh fans. He serves only his greedy ass while raping his fighters and exploting them. ex) Jardin’s purse against Chuck in the main event was $8000 befor the $4000 win bonus. are u kidding me>? and Dana drives a Ferrari. what an ahole douch bag.
He did this for one simple reason. itelligent fans knew the truth and Dana had to pull the wool over ignorant fans by making it look otherwise. Dana always had the “haterade syndrome for pride” which is the greatest testiment to him feeling the inferiority complex.
why does he not be fair and admit how bad UFC fighters faired in Japan. Couture for example lost in the first rd to guys not even ranked in top 30= Valenteen Overeem, Ensen Inoue. Vitor lost to Saku, Alistair. Conan Silvera 265lbs lost to 190lb saku. Little evil got whooped all over, Chuck got licked by Rampage.
Dana knew this when he calculated this ploy b/c he wioll be the first to admit “ring rust s very real”. then why Dana would you fighht these fighters afters two years of not fighting
When Hoyce was all the rage, people jumped on the bandwaggon and believed blindlessly that it was the greatest martail art. Little thought went into why he won those fights. fighters did not know Jiu jitsu and its concept at the time and did not know how to combat the style. thats why he won. along with teh fact the UFC was originally owned by the Gracies… Hand picked opponets… what do you think.
Then when Tito got hand picked opponents (peopel whose greatest weaknesses were take down defense) by Dana’s own admission , the same ‘UFC’ fans not MMA fans now claimed ground and # is the best.
Then, again they changed ships and said sprawl and brawl of Chuck is the best style. another word, whatever marketing image Dana created, that was the “end and be all” to them. Frustring for th ereal fan.
I appraud Anderson Silva for having the balls to stand up gainst the hand picking nature. He is not happy that he is being constantly being matched up with people who he is supposed to beat and showed his discontent in the Damian Maya fight. good for him.
Fight i would love to see Anderson is against Nathan Carnage Corbett in any style striking match. I would put my money easily on Nathan.. Look him up. but the point is at least Anderson like a true warrior wants real fights and not be politically protected under Dana’s skirt.
and as mad as Dana gets about Fedor being considered p4p best. how can u consider GSP as one when he never fought outside his weight clas.. BJ and Andy i will not argue against b/c they have fought at multiple l;vels.
Dana did make the sport but he also highly corrupted it and exploited it for greed. he couldn’t care less about his fighters or the sport as long as he can continue to fool the lesss educated and as long as his pockets are fat
I agree with all of you guys. My opinion, Chuck was a pro kickboxer before he fought mma as well as a div. 1 wrestler I think. He mixed it up well in the begining of his career. Later on in his career because he didn’t fight with Dana he got the the top spot best contract and is his closest friend. I also have to say that even though I’m not a fan of Dana’s decsion latley but him being a boxing promoter and fight manager he knew how to market his fighters.
I also didn’t agree with him saying the UFC are the best fighters in the world. It wasn’t that talent rich until UFC bought PRIDE. Now some fighters from PRIDE did well and some didn’t, it may have been the cage or rules what ever, but they lost and making excuses for those fighters are a waste of time. Shogun lost because of surgery, not the cage, he fought in a cage before he fought in PRIDE. Wanderlei first fought in the UFC before PRIDE and acutally fought fir the tittle against Tito. Kazushi Sakuraba before going to PRIDE and won. I think it’s the fighter not the atmosphere, although the Japanese crowd was very interested in the grappling matches. Chuck is just a victom of time. Age is just a number, look at Randy, 46 and willing to learn and evolve. Chuck never really did evolve. Since his first fight he’s always kickboxed and took people down, now the mma has evolved so much you need a little of everything to win. So Chuck, lost all fighters do, look at Machida, maybe he’ll win again if Dana decides to bring him back.
chuck should be able to fight some more fights. he always puts on a great show, and for one he was working rich franklin, he just needed to slow down a bit and throw some more leg kicks, and do some more take downs. bring back chuck!
Yeah Dana is a piece of sh#T cny. No doubt about it. He is corrupt but he made the sport. Wouldn’t you feel a certain entitlement after making a dead organization into a multi-billion dollar company? I’m not excusing how he treats the fighters because they deserve the money but fighters fight for money AND pride. Once a fighter takes out pride, he becomes a floyd mayweather type. Nobody wants that. Its so easy to exploit fighters its sickening. The choosing fighters to fight certain styles is what I think evovled the sport. Nothing that worked 10 years ago works now. I mean it does but basically you can’t have one game. If Dana didn’t pick tito(wrestler), chuck(ko artist), and randy (everything!) then people would still be in the ring with karate gees doing kata’s. He made it watchable. I remember seeing the first ufc. Before it started it was really hyped. I remember that hype because me and my friend begged our parents to order it. We watched the first Ufc and were COMPLETELY disappointed. Yeah the gracies owned it then they just forgot to tell people “hey unless your a true deep technical fight fan you will be bored to tears.” Dana fixed that. Like that prick or not, he just made it watchable. Think of how hard it would be to book matches that will make people watch back in the late 90′s early 00′s. You’d have to be a genius to get people at that time to tune into don frye every 3 months. Don’s great but you get me. Since the UFC is off and running pay the fighters but first, make good fights. And as for Anderson Silva he is a all time great to me. Oh and Dana is a intelligent sh*tbag
You are the piece of shit.Dana White is a smart guy and tells it like it is.You are just jumping on the hate Dana band wagon.Grow up and think for yourself. He made MMA what it is today.Who gives a shit whether you like the guy or not.To call him a piece of shit is just an ignorant statement to make about a guy who makes your life better than it was before he got involved.UFC forever!!
I agree with allen for the most part, not much cny, maybe like 50, From what i see, here how it goes, chuck liddel, throws amazing kicks, broke his arm, now that im done glorifying his strenths, his weaknesses, He is too emotional Joe rogan, right on, wants him to get angry, his emotions made him agressive in this fight, and thats what got him, Franklin is an AMAZING counter striker, AMAZING at evaluating things, We could say what if all day, but take this what if to heart, what if chuck hit him with that late kick and UNTILIZED that and instead of swarming on him, reacted by a quick backup and said oh… yeah…. I just hit you with a kick, he should of thought, let him come to you but His macho mind, I want to end it first round instead of utilizing the extra 2 rounds is what got him k.oed. wayy to over agressive, Franklin, his style was boring, probably couldn’t knock out silva(theres what i want to see a rematch) Franklin is a very tatical, stratigic fighter, but he is boring to me, I don’t like to see people get hit, back up, get hit back, up (I watched the first franklin vs silva fight) thats all i saw.. franklin probably ran miles away from silva that fight. very close call. All said and done, IMO chuck is not too old.. but he is.. too broken, too many k.o’s his energy si not there, hes moving slower, and isn’t tactical enough as MMA evolves, I mean dera tores is old swimmer 42, still setting records in the Olympics, but swimming and getting k.oed def has a an affect on performance, definitly comaring the two is night and day.
I think Chuck should retire. I have been wathing him since he started. I love the guy. He is a devastating striker, maybe even the best ever. He has taken way too many blows to the head. His chin is glass. It has nothing to do with the fact that he is fighting better opponents. And honestly i believe that though fighters today are great. I think in the prime of Liddell, Hughes, Gracie, and Couture, the fighters may not have been as skilled but they wanted it more and they would have destroyed many fighters today in there prime.
Damn Chuck. That really wasn’t much of a punch at all. His chin is absolutely gone. For his sake i wish he would’ve retired 2 fights ago. Just not a dignified way to go out.
